Lowanna and Ulong (Eastern Dorrigo)

The neighbouring hamlets of Lowanna and Ulong (Eastern Dorrigo) offer spectacular mountain views, magical rivers with waterfalls and swimming holes, National Park trails, lush farmland, rainforest, and loads of wildlife. 


Lowanna and Ulong sit at 640 metres above sea level, and experience much cooler conditions than Coffs Harbour. The 45-minute drive from Coffs Harbour climbs up the Dorrigo Mountain escarpment through towering subtropical rainforest, palms and fern trees and into the lush, undulating fields along the plateau. Keep your eye out for wildlife on this stretch of the road!

You'll deserve a break when you reach the plateau.

 

At Ulong, (the Village in the Valley), you will find a quaint little General store, including The Cafe in the Valley. Here you will find the most amazing home-made baked goods, the best Espresso coffee, and warm and comforting hearty meals for breakfast and lunch. In the cold months enjoy the warmth of the cosy indoor wood fire.  Before you visit on weekends, best to check to make sure they are open before hand.  

 

Ulong store is also a Tourist Information Hub where you can pick up a mud map of the area.

Open Monday to Saturday. Closed Sundays. You can fill up with fuel, or get a bite to eat at the Lowanna General Store and Box Car Cafe, in the town Lowanna, neighbouring Ulong.

Nature lovers will want to explore the pristine waters of Little Nymboida River, Bobo River and Battery Falls, while the adventurous can take on the trails of Nymboi-Binderay and Cascade National Parks. There are many waterfalls in the area to Explore if that's your thing, to name some more, Mobong falls, Bangalore falls, Megan falls, Scouts falls, Dangar falls Dorrigo, and Ebor falls a bit further along. 

There is a range of cosy retreats and Bed and Breakfasts in the area, so you can take your time taking in the peaceful surroundings. A lovely place to stay in the area, is the Friday Creek Retreat. A tranquil Coffs Harbour Hinterland retreat with 9 cottages nestled in the Orara Valley hills. There are also many places to stay in the quaint and Historic towns of Bellingen, and Dorrigo not too far away. You will also find luxury accommodation at the Resorts on the Coast just North of Coffs Harbour. There are also many caravan and camping parks. 

Lowanna and Ulong was once the centre for the local timber industry and gold mining, you'll find traces of local history throughout the area, including the old Railway Station, and the now closed, George's Gold mine. 

The very popular and charming, country Village of Bellingen, is a must visit town. You will love its atmosphere, old buildings, boutique shops, cafes and restaurants... nestled amongst lush farmland, pristine rivers and waterholes, and rolling green hills and scenic mountains.... just a stone's throw away from many beautiful beaches.  The Bellinger river and Never Never river are popular spots for pristine water holes, and not far from there you will find the Promised Lands, an absolute must if you love the beautiful green lush country side, forests, nature and crystal clear rocky bottom streams. 

Don't forget to visit the Historic Town of Dorrigo, with an elevation of 731 metres, it's the gateway to the World Heritage listed Dorrigo National park, and the ancient Gondwana rainforest. Here you will see, bird and wild life, stunning scenery, incredible landscapes, and dramatic waterfalls, offering a warm community atmosphere. The area has a rich History of European settlement, including Dairy farming and Timber cutting. You can visit the Guy Fawkes Historical Society Museum, which showcases the town's History.  Again, here you will find some lovely cafes. You can enjoy scenic walks, picnic spots, waterfalls, and panoramic views from the Skywalk lookout within in the Rainforest centre, at the Dorrigo National Park. Don't forget to see Dangar falls, a stunning 30 metre waterfall. Newly constructed is the new Viewing Platform, and there is also a walking trail down to the river and base of the falls, with an amazing huge swimming hole. Dangar falls is easily accessible from the town of Dorrigo. 

Other places to visit in the area

  • Coffs Coast Wild life sanctuary, (formerly known as the dolphin marine conservation park and pet porpoise pool), is a multi-award-winning wildlife sanctuary, situated on the NSW mid North Coast in Coffs Harbour. A must do if you have little ones with you. Have their photo taken with a seal or a python, just to name a few. you will the majority of a day to get the most out of your visit. 

 

  • Forest Sky Pier Sealy Lookout, is a spectacular architectural feature, providing a lookout with panoramic views over the Coffs Coast and Hinterland, which is in the Orara East state Forest. 

 

  • The Clog Barn, Coffs Harbour. Experience the colour and charm of Holland without leaving Coffs Harbour. At the clog Barn take a delightful stroll around the miniature Dutch village, with its miniature working Dutch wind mills. There is a caravan park here as well as a Cafe, where you will experience some traditional Dutch food, and in the gift shop you will see all the Dutch Clogs and Dutch gifts, including Delft blue and white China. 

 

  • Solitary Islands Aquarium. A window into the unique marine life, of the Coffs Coast, awaits you at the Solitary Islands Aquarium. Discover what makes the Coffs Coast so special through a series of Aquariums, interactive and visual displays, and presentations. See animals that call the Coffs Coast home, including colourful clown fish, crayfish, sea urchins, lionfish, angelfish and butterfly fish, amongst iridescent corals.. There is also a touch tank, for children, with star fish, sea cucumbers and sea urchins etc. 

  • The Coffs Harbour Butterly House. One of Coffs most amazing attractions, is an award-winning butterfly house, which offers visitors to stroll amongst hundreds of Australian butterflies in a subtropical rainforest setting. Share the world of butterflies, as they fly, court, mate, sip nectar, or rest in the light showing of their fascinating colours and patterns. Also offered, explore an Alice in wonderland maze with fun challenges for all ages, as well as experience dinosaur shows, a hatchery, and a magical fairy forest.  

  • Who could forget Coffs Harbour's famous, The Big Banana fun park. Born from the vision of John Landi, in 1964, seeking to captivate passing traffic. It has evolved into a vibrant fun park, proudly featuring the largest water park between Sydney and the Gold coast, and ice skating rink, toboggan ride, a theatre, laser tag arena, mini golf course, the country's biggest giant slide "The Racer", 4D ride simulator, gift shop, Cafe, candy making kitchen, opal centre, reptile world, and more... The perfect place for children to have a lot of fun. 

 

  • If you're into beautiful beaches, there are plenty along the Coffs Coast. Starting with Sawtell, then The Jetty at Coff's Harbour, then heading North to Saphire beach just past Coffs, then to Moonee beach, Emerald beach, Sandy beach, and so on. There are plenty of places to stay including some amazing Resorts, and Caravan Parks. Plenty of places to fish, and lots of dog friendly beaches along the way also. Many Cafes and Restaurants with many different cuisines to choose from. 

This is just some of the things to do, with in roughly 45 mins to 1 hour and 20 mins drive from Lowanna, where Barn of Rustique Vintage is situated on our 112 acres amongst semi tropical rainforest and lush rolling hills and farmland. If you do decide to take a road trip, there's no doubt that you will thoroughly love the area.
